Identifying Initial Sounds: Pass the Purse

Hi everyone! I am Faith from Kindergarten Faith, and I am super excited to be guest blogging here today. This is my 4 year teaching kindergarten, and before that I taught 6th grade for 5 years and P.E. for 1. During this wonderful Christmas season, I am sending out lots of prayers and hugs! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Identifying initial sounds comes easy for some, but it can be difficult for others.  We play a little game called "Pass the Purse" to work on this skill.  It is kind of like Hot Potato, and the kids love it because they get to sing too!

We start by sitting in a circle.  I put a lot of small objects/toys in a bag (our purse) like a cat, dog, pen, frog, glasses, monkey, tiger, etc.  Then we start singing, "Pass, pass, pass, the purse, pass it round and round.  We're looking for a special sound and look at what we've found!"  The purse is passed while we are singing, and the person who has the purse when the song stops gets to pick out an object.  He or she will tell us the initial sound the object's name makes and letter that makes that sound.  Then we start again! :0)

The kids love this game, and it keeps everyone very engaged!  There are many other ways you can use this simple song to activate learning.  Click on the link below to hear the song on YouTube.

  1. Faith, Great idea! My kinders are struggling with final sound and in January I am going to use your game to work on that concept. Thank you for sharing!

    1. Hi Faith -
Some suggestions for your Kinders and rhyming, or final sounds that are the same:
"Icky Sticky and Ooey Gooey" - this great song leaves the last word of each verse dangling- the kids have to find the rhyming body part. If you don't know the song, it was the August 2006 Song of the Month on my website: macaronisoup.com, or on my STINKY CAKE cd.
"Going Places" is on my newest recording, SEASON SINGS! Kids will find the rhyming transportation mode at the end of each verse thus:
"But if it starts to rain, we'll choo choo on the _____
If it's too hot to hike, we'll have to ride a _____
And if it's very far, we'll have to drive a ______."
In my experience, rhyming just clicks with some children, while for some it takes lots of practice.

  2. So child-centered and appropriate! I am sure they are engaged and remember this, and even play this at home!
